Obama&#8217;s final (2016) turkey pardon offers a cornucopia of Thanksgiving puns you can use to teach a few common idioms and Thanksgiving-related vocabulary.<\/p>\n<h3>How to go about it?<\/h3>\n<p>You&#8217;ll need a video of the pardon, available <a href=\"https:\/\/obamawhitehouse.archives.gov\/blog\/2016\/11\/22\/president-obama-final-turkey-pardon\">on this website<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/drive\/folders\/1m0Gorglgo9T_Q7o8PzMu8xB-A60w_9Gc?usp=sharing\">this handout<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To start with, elicit\u00a0<em>turkey pardon\u00a0<\/em>and <em>dad joke.\u00a0<\/em>With stronger groups you can first play the video, have students fish for the Thanksgiving puns and see who finds the most. Then students listen again and complete the gaps. With less advanced learners, start with the handout right away.<\/p>\n<p>After students complete the gaps, check answers in open class. Then have them work in pairs or small groups and explain the puns. Monitor and guide as necessary.<\/p>\n<h3>Extension<\/h3>\n<p>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/quizlet.com\/_42vmi5?x=1jqt&amp;i=pnmlx\">this Quizlet set<\/a> to consolidate and extend the vocabulary.
